MUMUYE ART

From Tribe to Style

Galleria Six, Piazza Piola 5, Milan, is pleased to present an exhibition of African art under the title, "MUMUYE ART - From Tribe to Style". 

 

While this may seem a radical departure for a gallery so closely associated with contemporary art, the stylistic language of Mumuye figure sculptures provides inspiration to artists today, just as it did to Henry Moore who sketched and described one of the earliest examples collected shortly after it entered a western museum collection in the 1920s, when such figures were attributed to their Chamba neighbours rather than to the Mumuye.

 

Twelve figures have been selected to display something of the range of Mumuye stylistic expression. These will be illustrated in a book, published by Prearo Editore, together with an introductory essay explaining their background written for the occasion by Richard Fardon. 

 

Until little over a half century ago, the art world remained unaware of the Mumuye origin of these sculptures, yet, within a few years, works attributed to this relatively remote Nigerian people had become among the most avidly celebrated and collected of West African art.

 

Why did this happen so quickly and so late?  How do collectors know an object is in Mumuye style? Did only Mumuye make artworks in Mumuye style? And did all Mumuye sub-groups, or indeed individual artists, create in the same distinctive style? Did that style change over time? And how did a previously unrecognized style so quickly become part of the conversation around classical African art?

Galleria Six, Piazza Piola 5, Milano, è lieta di presentare una mostra di arte africana dal titolo "MUMUYE ART - From Tribe to Style". 

 

Sebbene questo possa sembrare un cambiamento radicale per una galleria così strettamente associata all'arte contemporanea, il linguaggio stilistico delle sculture Mumuye è fonte di ispirazione per gli artisti di oggi, proprio come lo fu per Henry Moore, che disegnò e descrisse uno dei primi esempi raccolti poco dopo l'ingresso in una collezione museale occidentale negli anni Venti, quando tali sculture erano attribuite ai loro vicini Chamba piuttosto che ai Mumuye.

 

Sono state selezionate dodici sculture per mostrare la gamma di espressioni stilistiche dei Mumuye. Queste saranno illustrate in un libro, pubblicato da Prearo Editore, insieme a un saggio introduttivo che ne spiega il contesto, scritto per l'occasione da Richard Fardon. 

 

Fino a poco più di mezzo secolo fa, il mondo dell'arte ignorava l'origine Mumuye di queste sculture, eppure, nel giro di pochi anni, le opere attribuite a questo popolo nigeriano relativamente remoto sono diventate tra le più celebrate e collezionate dell'arte dell'Africa occidentale.

 

Perché ciò è avvenuto così rapidamente e così tardi?  Come fanno i collezionisti a sapere che un oggetto è in stile Mumuye? Solo i Mumuye creavano opere d'arte nello stile Mumuye? E tutti i sottogruppi di Mumuye, o addirittura i singoli artisti, creavano nello stesso stile distintivo? Questo stile è cambiato nel tempo? E come ha fatto uno stile precedentemente non riconosciuto a diventare così rapidamente parte della conversazione sull'arte classica africana?
