John Walker

It is with great pride that  Galleria Six announces a solo exhibition by John Walker.

Born in Birmingham, England, in 1939, he went through his first studies in his hometown and completed them in Paris at the legendary Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

His juvenile season was inspired by postpictorial abstraction.  Crucial was then the  meeting with Betty Parsons, the legendary gallerist of Pollock and Rothko, who early appreciated his work and showed it in her gallery in New York in 1967.

Walker therefore had the chance to approach the American art world, which he never abandoned afterward.

In the 1960s he painted shaped canvases, populated by few signs and forms. In the 1970s he worked instead on large bright dotted surfaces  stained with fingerprints and color spots. In the 1980s he autonomously approached Neo-Expressionism, while remaining true to his abstract language and keeping alive his interest in geometric structures. In recent years, finally, his language has become more disciplined, focusing on the variation of linear elements.

The 12 paintings here shown( and presented for the first  time in Italy) were specifically created for Galleria Six and highlight John Walker’s latest reasearch. A research that comes from the observation of a specific location, "Pemaquid" (nowadays,  Bristol, Maine) and that leads the artist to a new stage of his oeuvre, where the matter density at times seems to be mixed with mud, almost overpowering its linear structure  and leaving room for  that dimension of controlled disorder and excess that can be perceived in his work.

In 1972 he represented Great Britain at the XXXVI  Venice Biennial and many of the most important public institutions all over the  world have organized his solo exhibitions, including: MoMA, Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Phillips Collection, Washington , DC; Tate Gallery, London; Hayward Gallery, London; The Kunstverein, Hamburg;  the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) , Sydney.

He is currently a Professor Emeritus of Art and former Head of the graduate program in Painting at Boston University School of Visual Arts.

Lives and works in Boston, Massachusetts and in South Bristol, Maine.

E' con orgoglio che la Galleria Six annuncia la mostra personale di John Walker.

Artista nato a Birmingham, England, nel 1939, che ha compiuto i primi studi nella città natale e li ha completati a Parigi nella leggendaria Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

 Da subito la sua stagione giovanile ha preso le mosse dall’astrazione postpittorica , decisivo  è stato infatti l’incontro con Betty Parsons,  leggendaria gallerista di Pollock e Rothko, che apprezza precocemente il suo lavoro  e che nel 1967  espone  nella sua galleria di New York.

Walker si avvicina così al mondo artistico americano, che da allora non ha più abbandonato

 Negli anni Sessanta dipingeva tele sagomate, abitate da pochi segni e forme. Negli anni Settanta ha lavorato invece su grandi superfici luminose, punteggiate e, per così dire, sporcate da impronte e macchie di colore. Negli anni Ottanta si è avvicinato in modo autonomo al neo-espressionismo, rimanendo però fedele al suo linguaggio astratto e mantenendo vivo l’interesse per le strutture geometriche. Negli ultimi anni, infine, il suo linguaggio si è maggiormente disciplinato, incentrandosi sulla declinazione di elementi lineari.

Le 12 tele realizzate appositamente per la Galleria Six , evidenziano  l'ultima ricerca  di John Walker, presentata per la prima volta in Italia ,  nata dall'osservazione di un luogo preciso,  “Pemaquid”   (oggi Bristol nel Maine) e che conduce l'artista ad un nuovo stadio della sua opera pittorica, dove la densità della materia a volte appare come mescolata al fango  e quasi a sopraffare la struttura lineare,  lasciando spazio a  quella dimensione di disordine controllato e di eccedenza che si avverte sempre nel suo lavoro.

John Walker nel 1972 ha rappresentato la Gran Bretagna alla XXXVI Biennale di Venezia e molte delle più importanti istituzioni pubbliche al mondo  hanno organizzato sue mostre personali, tra le quali :  MoMA , Museo d'Arte Moderna di New York;   Phillips Collection , Washington, DC;  Tate Gallery, Londra;  Hayward Gallery di Londra; I l Kunstverein, Hamburg; La Galleria d'arte del New South Wales a Sydney, Australia  

Attualmente è Professor Emeritus of  Art ed ex  responsabile del corso di Laurea in Pittura alla  Boston University School of Visual Arts .

Vive e lavora in Boston, Massachusetts e in  South Bristol, Maine.
